Heavy Truck & Heavy Pickup HID Bulb Guide — D1S, D2S, D3S Factory HID Replacement
Factory D-series HID on Class 7/Class 8 highway tractors and heavy pickups is uncommon — most over-the-road trucks ship with sealed-beam halogen, H7/H11 halogen, or factory LED, and new-build HID on Class 8 tractors is rare post-2020. Where HID is factory-installed, it is almost always D1S or D2S in a projector low-beam, and is restricted to top-spec or optional Premium / Premier headlamp packages. On heavy pickups, factory HID is specific to Limited and Laramie Limited trims of the Ram 1500 (DS/DT chassis, 2013–2018) which use D3S. Ford Super Duty and Ram 2500/3500 ship halogen or LED across all trims in Canada. Always confirm by pulling the existing bulb and reading the code on the base before ordering.
Class 8 Highway Tractors
Freightliner Cascadia Evolution / New Cascadia (2018+)
D2S projector HID low-beam on Premier-package builds. The LED headlamp package is more common on new Cascadia builds — confirm by checking for a ballast module behind the headlamp assembly. The bulb code is stamped on the base of the existing capsule.
Kenworth T680 (2013–2022 Premium HID option)
D2S or D1S projector HID low-beam depending on model year and option code — the Premium HID headlamp changed bulb type across the production run. Confirm via the existing capsule before ordering. Standard T680 builds use halogen or LED.
Peterbilt 579 / 567 (Premier headlamp package)
D2S projector HID low-beam on Premier-package builds. Standard and LED-package builds do not use a D-series capsule. Confirm via the existing capsule before ordering.
International LT / LoneStar (Premier package)
D2S projector HID low-beam reported on Premier-package builds. Confirm via the existing capsule before ordering.
Volvo VNL 760 / 860 (I-Shift Globetrotter)
D1S projector HID low-beam reported on Globetrotter-spec builds. Confirm via the existing capsule before ordering.
No Confirmed Factory HID
Mack Anthem / Pinnacle — Projector halogen or LED only; no confirmed factory D-series HID on any Canadian-market Mack tractor.
Ford F-250 / F-350 Super Duty (all trims, 2017–2019 and current) — H13 halogen across all trim levels including Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum. No factory D-series HID on any Super Duty sold in Canada.
Heavy Pickups
Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn / Limited (DS/DT chassis, 2013–2018)
D3S projector HID low-beam on Laramie Longhorn and Limited trim with factory Xenon headlamps. Base, Tradesman, Big Horn, and Sport trims use H11 halogen low-beam — confirm by checking for a ballast module before ordering.
Ram 2500 / 3500 Laramie Limited (2014–2018)
Factory D-series HID is not confirmed on the Ram 2500/3500 HD chassis in Canadian-market specification. Most Ram HD trucks use halogen or LED regardless of trim. If your Ram HD has a projector low-beam with a ballast module, pull the existing capsule and read the code before ordering.
GMC Sierra 1500 Denali K2 (2016–2018)
D5S — covered in the main GMC HID Bulb Guide. Included here for cross-reference only.

Heavy Truck HID Headlight FAQs
Does my Cascadia have HID or LED?
Check the headlight assembly. An HID projector has a single projector lens with a visible bulb base at the rear and a separate ballast module mounted nearby. An LED assembly has multiple individual LEDs or a light bar and no ballast. Build date and the Premier headlamp option code determine which system your truck has — if uncertain, call us with your VIN at 647‑547‑1962.
Can I replace a D2S in a Class 8 truck with the same bulb I'd use in a BMW?
Yes — D2S is D2S. The capsule, base, and ignition voltage are identical across all vehicle types. Only the housing geometry differs. Osram 66240 and Philips 85122 are direct replacements in any D2S application, passenger car or tractor.
My 2017 Ram 1500 Limited — D3S?
Yes. The Laramie Longhorn and Limited trims on the 2013–2018 DS Ram 1500 use D3S projector HID low-beam. Base, Big Horn, Sport, and Rebel trims use H11 halogen. Confirm by checking for a ballast module behind the headlamp housing.
Why don't more highway tractors use HID?
Fleet maintenance simplicity. LED is now cheaper to spec at build and lasts the service life of the tractor without bulb replacement. HID adds labour cost and a consumable component that fleets prefer to avoid. New-build HID Class 8 is rare post-2020 — most 2021+ tractors with projector low-beams use LED.
Not sure which bulb your truck needs?
Pull the existing capsule and read the code stamped on the base. If you cannot access it, send us your VIN or call 647‑547‑1962 and we will confirm the correct type before you order.
