GMC HID Headlight Bulb Guide — D1S, D3S, D5S Replacement for Acadia, Sierra Denali & Yukon Denali

GMC HID Headlight Bulb Replacement Guide

GMC factory HID headlamps are concentrated on the Acadia, Yukon Denali, and Sierra 1500 Denali. Three D-series capsules are used across these models: D1S (Osram 66144, Philips 85410) on the first-generation Acadia (2007–2012); D3S (Osram 66340, Philips 42302) on the refreshed Acadia (2013–2019) and Yukon Denali (2015–2017); and D5S (GM OE 13594523; Philips 12410XVC21) on the Sierra 1500 Denali (2016–2018) and some late-build 2018 Yukon Denali Ultimate units. D5S is a 25W mercury-free capsule unique to a small group of GM and Cadillac vehicles and is not interchangeable with D3S despite a similar appearance. The Sierra 1500 Denali moved to full LED headlamps on the 2019 T1 platform. This guide covers factory HID-equipped trims only — always confirm the D-code stamped on your existing capsule before ordering.

Factory HID Models (GMC)

Acadia
Lambda first generation (2007–2012 SLT / Denali with factory HID) — D1S projector HID low-beam. Lower trims used halogen in the same years.
Lambda refresh and second generation (2013–2019 Denali / SLT with factory HID) — D3S projector HID low-beam. The 2013 refresh moved from D1S to D3S; lower trims continued with halogen.

Sierra 1500 Denali
K2 Denali (2016–2018) — D5S projector HID low-beam and high-beam standard on the Denali trim. The Sierra 1500 Denali is one of the few North American pickup trucks to use the 25W D5S capsule. Note: the 2019+ T1 Sierra Denali moved to full LED headlamps and does not use a D-series bulb.

Yukon Denali / Yukon XL Denali
K2XL Denali (2015–2017) — D3S projector HID low-beam standard on the Denali trim.
K2XL Denali Ultimate (some 2018 builds) — GM mixed D3S and D5S inventory across 2018 build weeks on the Denali Ultimate. If you have a 2018 Yukon Denali, confirm the bulb type by reading the D-code stamped on your existing capsule before ordering — do not assume D3S or D5S based on year alone. The Yukon XL Denali uses the same headlamp assembly and the same bulb as the Yukon Denali in all years.

GMC HID Headlight FAQs

My 2017 Sierra Denali has a strange-looking HID bulb — D3S or D5S?
D5S. The Sierra 1500 Denali K2 (2016–2018) uses a 25W D5S capsule, which is one of the few North American pickup trucks to use this bulb type. D5S looks similar to D3S but has a different base key and ballast voltage — the two are not interchangeable.

Can I install D3S in a Sierra Denali that came with D5S?
No. D5S runs at 25W on a different ballast voltage curve than D3S. Installing a D3S in a D5S housing will cause ballast faults and improper output. Use D5S only in these vehicles.

Is my Yukon Denali D3S or D5S?
Most K2XL Yukon Denali (2015–2017) are D3S. Some late-build 2018 Denali Ultimate units left the factory with D5S due to mixed GM inventory across build weeks. If you have a 2018 Yukon Denali, pull the existing capsule and read the code stamped on the base — do not order by year alone.

Did the 2013 Acadia Denali come with factory HID?
Yes — the 2013 refresh moved the Acadia from D1S to D3S. If you have a 2013–2019 Acadia Denali or SLT with factory HID, the correct replacement is D3S.

Not sure which bulb your GMC needs?
The bulb code is stamped on the base of the capsule. If you cannot access it easily, send us your VIN or call 647‑547‑1962 and we will confirm the correct type before you order.
