Volvo HID Headlight Bulb Guide — D1S, D2S, D2R, D3S Replacement for S40, S60, S80, V50, V60, V70, XC60, XC90 & C30
Volvo's HID lineup runs from 2002 through 2017 and requires careful attention to generation and headlamp option. The P1 and early P2 chassis (C30, C70, S40, V50) use D2S (Volvo OEM 983581; Osram 66240, Philips 85122) in standard projector headlamps, while the pre-P3 S60, S80 P2, V70 P2, and XC90 Mk1 (2003–2006) use D2R in their reflector housings — D2S and D2R are not interchangeable. The P3 generation and Active Bending Lights / Adaptive Headlights option shifted most models to D1S (Volvo OEM 30763954; Osram 66144, Philips 85410) or D3S (Volvo OEM 31290593; Osram 66340, Philips 42302). The SPA-platform XC90 (2016+), S90, and V90 use LED Matrix headlamps and no longer use a D-series bulb. This guide covers factory HID-equipped trims only — always confirm the bulb code stamped on your existing capsule before ordering.

Volvo HID Headlight FAQs
My 2010 C30 has Adaptive Headlights — D2S or D3S?
D3S. The base C30 Xenon (2008–2013) uses D2S, but adding the Adaptive Bending Lights / Active Headlights option changes the assembly and bulb to D3S. The same rule applies to the C70 Adaptive. If you are unsure which headlamp assembly your car has, pull the existing bulb and read the code on the base.
My 2013 S80 — D1S or D2S?
D1S. The P3 S80 facelift in 2013 moved to D1S (Volvo OEM 30763954) on HID-equipped builds. The 2007–2012 P3 S80 uses D2S, and the earlier P2 (2004–2006) uses D2R — confirm by reading the bulb code before ordering.
My 2014 XC60 — D1S or D3S?
D3S. The 2014 P3 facelift moved the XC60 from D1S to D3S. If you have a 2010–2013 XC60 with factory HID, the correct bulb is D1S.
Did the XC90 Mk2 ever come with HID?
No. The SPA-platform XC90 (2016+) uses LED Matrix headlamps on Inscription and projector LED on lower trims. D1S applies only to the Mk1 XC90 (2007–2014), and D2R applies to the earliest Mk1 XC90 (2003–2006).
Why does my 2008 V70 P3 use D1S but my 2005 V70 P2 use D2R?
Volvo redesigned the headlamp housing between the P2 and P3 generations. The P2 V70 (2004–2006) uses a reflector housing requiring D2R; the P3 V70 (2007–2010) moved to a projector housing using D1S. D2R and D1S are not interchangeable.
Not sure which bulb your Volvo needs?
The bulb code is stamped on the base of the capsule. If you cannot access it easily, send us your VIN or call 647‑547‑1962 and we will confirm the correct type before you order.
