Toyota HID Headlight Bulb Replacement Guide

Toyota was one of the largest mainstream brands to standardize on the mercury‑free D4‑series HID family. Factory Xenon headlights appear on specific Limited, Platinum and higher‑grade trims only; halogen was standard on the majority of Canadian Toyota trims across all of these model lines. D4S capsules (part references: Philips 42402, Osram 66440) are used in projector housings, while D4R capsules (Philips 42406, Osram 66450) carry a painted shield for reflector housings and are not interchangeable with D4S even though they use the same ballast voltage. Always check the "D4S" or "D4R" marking on your existing bulb before ordering.

Factory HID Models (Toyota)

Avalon
XX30 (2005–2010 with factory Xenon) — D4R reflector HID low‑beam.
XX40 (2011–2018 Limited with factory Xenon) — D4S projector HID low‑beam; base and XLE trims are typically halogen.

Camry
XV50 (2012–2017 XLE / Hybrid XLE with factory HID) — D4S projector HID low‑beam; the Canadian XV40 Camry (2007–2011) did not come with factory HID — any D‑series bulb on a XV40 indicates a previous owner retrofit.

Highlander
XU50 (2014–2019 Limited / Platinum with factory HID) — D4S projector HID low‑beam; non‑HID XU50 trims and all XU40 (2008–2013) Highlanders use halogen H11 low‑beams.

Land Cruiser
J200 (2008–2021) — D4S projector HID low‑beam; standard fitment across all Canadian Land Cruiser trims in this generation.

Prius
XW30 (2010–2015 Persona / Technology Package with factory HID) — D4R reflector HID low‑beam; base and non‑Technology trims are halogen.
XW50 (2016–2022 Prius) — LED standard across all Canadian trims; no factory D‑series HID in this generation.

Sienna
XL30 (2011–2020 Limited with factory HID) — D4S projector HID low‑beam; LE and SE trims are halogen.

Venza
AV10 (2009–2016 Limited with factory HID) — D4S projector HID low‑beam; confirm "D4S" on the bulb base before ordering as trim-level variation exists.

Toyota HID Headlight FAQs

What is the difference between D4S and D4R?
Both run on the same ballast voltage, but D4S is a clear‑glass capsule designed for projector (lens) housings, while D4R has a painted opaque shield for reflector housings. Installing a D4S in a D4R reflector housing — or vice versa — will produce a dangerously improper beam pattern. Always match the suffix (S or R) exactly to what came in your car.

My 2008 Camry has what looks like a projector. Does it use D4R or D4S?
The Canadian‑market XV40 Camry (2007–2011) did not come with factory HID in any trim. If your XV40 has HID, it was installed by a previous owner and will use whatever bulb that conversion kit specifies — not an OEM D‑series capsule. Check the bulb and ballast markings directly.

Does the 2014–2019 Highlander Limited have factory HID?
Yes — the XU50 Highlander Limited and Platinum came with D4S factory HID projectors. Earlier XU40 (2008–2013) Highlanders, including Limited trims, use halogen H11 low‑beams in Canada.

Is the 2016+ Prius HID or LED?
The XW50 Prius (2016–2022) uses LED low‑beams as standard across all Canadian trims. Only the XW30 (2010–2015) with the Technology Package uses factory D4R HID.

Need help confirming your Toyota bulb?
Remove one bulb and read the code printed on the metal base — it will say "D4S" or "D4R" clearly. If you can't read it or aren't sure, send us a photo or call 647‑547‑1962 before ordering.
