Saab HID Headlight Bulb Guide — D1S, D2S, D2R Replacement for 9-3, 9-5, 9-7x & 9-2x

Saab's HID era spans 2002 (9-5 Aero) through 2012 (final 9-3 and 9-5 NG). The brand is almost entirely a D2S → D1S story: the 9-3 Mk2 (2003–2007) used D2S (Saab OEM 12790588; Osram 66240, Philips 85122) while the 9-3 facelift (2008–2012), 9-5 Mk1 HID builds (2002–2009), 9-5 NG (2010–2011), and 9-7x all used D1S (Saab/GM OEM 5402433; Osram 66144, Philips 85410). The 9-2x Aero is the exception — it is a Subaru Impreza WRX-based rebadge and uses D2R, not D2S, due to its reflector housing. Saab discontinued production in 2012; all bulbs remain in active aftermarket supply from Philips and Osram. This guide covers factory HID-equipped trims only — always confirm the bulb code stamped on your existing capsule before ordering.

Factory HID Models (Saab)

9-2x
Subaru-rebadge (2005–2006 Aero with factory HID) — D2R reflector HID low-beam. Note: the 9-2x uses D2R (reflector housing), not D2S (projector housing) — these are not interchangeable. This is a Subaru WRX-based platform and shares its headlamp architecture with the Subaru Impreza WRX of the same era.

9-3
Mk2 (2003–2007 Aero / Arc with factory HID) — D2S projector HID low-beam throughout the pre-facelift run.
Mk2 facelift (2008–2012 Aero / Turbo X with factory HID) — D1S projector HID low-beam. The 2008 facelift is the clear D2S → D1S transition year for the 9-3.

9-5 Mk1
(2002–2009 Aero / Linear with factory HID) — D1S projector HID low-beam on HID-equipped builds. Base trims across this range were frequently delivered with halogen headlamps — confirm by checking for a ballast module behind the housing before ordering.

9-5 NG
Mk2 (2010–2011 Aero / Turbo4 with factory HID) — D1S projector HID low-beam. Canadian volume was very low across only two model years; the 9-5 NG ballast is a common failure item on these vehicles.

9-7x
GMT360 platform (2005–2009 5.3i / Aero with factory HID) — D1S projector HID low-beam. The 9-7x shares its platform and D1S bulb with the Chevrolet Trailblazer SS of the same era.

Saab HID Headlight FAQs

My 2007 9-3 Aero — D1S or D2S?
D2S. The 2008 facelift is when Saab shifted the 9-3 to D1S. If you have a 2003–2007 9-3 with factory HID, the correct bulb is D2S (Saab OEM 12790588).

9-5 NG (2010–2011) — what bulb?
D1S. The second-generation 9-5 uses D1S throughout on HID-equipped builds. Canadian volume was extremely limited across only two production years. If the headlamps are flickering or slow to ignite, the ballast (OEM Saab 5408497) is a common failure point on these vehicles — swap the bulb side to side first to isolate the fault before replacing the ballast.

Is the 9-7x a Trailblazer underneath?
Yes — the Saab 9-7x is built on the GMT360 platform shared with the Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Envoy. The D1S bulb is identical across all GMT360-platform HID applications.

The 9-2x Aero — is that D2S?
No — the 9-2x Aero uses D2R, not D2S. The 9-2x is a rebadged Subaru Impreza WRX and uses a reflector headlamp housing that requires D2R. D2S and D2R share the same electrical specification but differ in the internal shield that controls beam pattern — installing D2S in a D2R reflector housing will cause glare. If you have a 9-2x, confirm the bulb code by reading the stamp on the base of the existing capsule.

Can I still get OEM-spec bulbs for a discontinued Saab?
Yes. D1S, D2S, and D2R all remain in active OEM aftermarket production from Philips and Osram and are direct drop-in replacements for all factory Saab HID applications.
