Porsche HID Headlight Bulb Replacement Guide

Porsche HID timing is unusual: the 911, Boxster, and Cayenne cycled through D2SD1SD2SD3S across four generations — opposite the direction most OEM brands followed. The driver of each transition was the Porsche Litronic and PDLS headlamp hardware, which uses different ignition modules per generation. The 996 (2002–2004) used D2S (Porsche OEM 99963103690; Osram 66240, Philips 85122); the 997.1 (2005–2008) moved to D1S (Porsche OEM 999-631-133-91; Osram 66144, Philips 85410); the 997.2 (2010–2012) reverted to D2S; and the 991 and all third-generation models (2013+) with PDLS bi-xenon use D3S (Porsche OEM 999-631-070-90; Osram 66340, Philips 42302). Later production years across all platforms moved to full LED. D1S, D2S, and D3S are not interchangeable. This guide covers factory HID-equipped trims only; always confirm the bulb code stamped on your existing capsule before ordering.

Factory HID Models (Porsche)

718 (Boxster / Cayman)
982 (2017 with factory HID / PDLS) — D3S projector HID low-beam on PDLS-equipped builds. Most 718 models in Canada are equipped with LED headlamps; HID was available only on the early PDLS specification. Confirm by reading the bulb code before ordering.

911
996 (2002–2004 Litronic) — D2S projector HID low-beam.
997.1 (2005–2008 Litronic) — D1S projector HID low-beam. Porsche redesigned the ignition module between the 996 and 997.1, switching from D2S to D1S.
997.2 (2010–2012 PDLS) — D2S projector HID low-beam. Porsche reverted to D2S with the 997.2 PDLS hardware revision.
991 (2013–2016 with factory PDLS bi-xenon) — D3S on PDLS bi-xenon builds; later 991 production and the GT3 variants use LED. Confirm by reading the bulb code before ordering.

Boxster
986 (1999–2008 Litronic) — D1S projector HID low-beam throughout the 986 run.
987.2 (2009–2012 PDLS) — D2S projector HID low-beam.
981 (2013–2016 PDLS) — D3S projector HID low-beam on PDLS-equipped builds.

Carrera GT
980 (2003–2005 Litronic) — D1S projector HID low-beam. D1S remains in active production from Philips and Osram and is a direct OEM replacement.

Cayenne
9PA (1999–2008 Litronic) — D1S projector HID low-beam on Litronic-equipped builds. Note: late 9PA production included both D1S and D2S units depending on assembly date — visually verify your existing bulb before ordering.
958.1 (2009–2012 PDLS) — D2S projector HID low-beam as listed by AbsoluteHID. Some third-party sources list this generation as D1S — confirm by reading the bulb code stamped on your existing capsule.
958.2 (2013–2017 PDLS Plus) — D3S projector HID low-beam on PDLS Plus-equipped builds.

Cayman
987.1 (2006–2008 Litronic) — D1S projector HID low-beam.
987.2 (2009–2012 PDLS) — D2S projector HID low-beam.
981 (2014–2016 PDLS) — D3S projector HID low-beam on PDLS-equipped builds.

Macan
95B (2015–2017 with factory HID option) — D3S projector HID low-beam on HID-equipped builds. Later 95B production and the 95B facelift moved to LED headlamps standard.

Panamera
970 (2010–2016 with factory HID) — D1S projector HID low-beam throughout the 970 generation. The 971 Panamera (2017+) uses PDLS Plus LED Matrix headlamps and does not use a D-series bulb.

Porsche HID Headlight FAQs

Why does my 997.1 use D1S but my 997.2 use D2S?
Porsche redesigned the headlamp ignition module as part of the PDLS hardware introduction on the 997.2. The 997.1 Litronic system uses D1S with an integrated igniter; the 997.2 PDLS system uses a separate external igniter and D2S. Always confirm via bulb removal — the bulb code is stamped on the base of the capsule.

My 2010 Cayenne — D1S or D2S?
The 958.1 Cayenne (2009–2012) with PDLS is documented as D2S in the AbsoluteHID table. However, some aftermarket and OEM sources list late 9PA / early 958 Cayenne units as D1S depending on the assembly configuration. Pull the existing bulb and read the code stamped on the base before ordering.

Does the Macan come with D3S?
Yes — the 95B Macan (2015–2017) with factory HID uses D3S throughout. Later 95B production moved to LED headlamps; if your Macan has LED headlamps, no D-series bulb is required.

My 2017 Panamera — does it have HID?
No. The 971 Panamera (2017+) uses PDLS Plus LED Matrix headlamps standard and does not use a D-series bulb. D1S applies only to the 970 Panamera (2010–2016).

My Carrera GT is 22 years old — can I still get D1S?
Yes. D1S remains in active production from Philips and Osram and is a direct OEM replacement for the 980 Carrera GT (2003–2005). The bulb has not been discontinued and is stocked as a standard replacement capsule.

Not sure which bulb your Porsche needs?
The bulb code is stamped on the base of the capsule. If you cannot access it easily, send us your VIN or call 647‑547‑1962 and we will confirm the correct type before you order.
