Motorcycle & Powersports HID Bulb Guide — D1S, D2S Factory HID Replacement
Factory D-series HID on motorcycles in Canada is concentrated on a small number of premium BMW touring and sport platforms. Confirmed OEM applications use D1S or D2S exclusively — D3S, D4S, and D5S have not appeared in confirmed factory motorcycle headlamp applications in Canada as of model-year 2025. Most premium motorcycles advertised with "HID-style" or "xenon-look" lighting use projector halogen or LED, not a D-series capsule. Aftermarket HID conversion kits using H4, H7, or H11 adapters are common on platforms such as the Honda Gold Wing — these are not factory HID and do not use D-series bulbs. This guide covers confirmed factory OEM D-series HID installations only. Always confirm by pulling the existing bulb and reading the code stamped on the base before ordering.
Confirmed Factory HID — BMW Motorcycles
BMW K 1600 GT / GTL / GTL Exclusive / Grand America / Bagger
(2011–2018 with factory Xenon low-beam) — D1S projector HID low-beam. The K1600 platform launched with a D1S low-beam projector across all variants. Note: some late-production K1600 builds and post-2019 models have the adaptive LED cornering headlamp unit — confirm by pulling the existing capsule before ordering.
BMW R 1200 RT / R 1250 RT
(2014+ with Xenon / Premium headlamp package) — D2S projector HID low-beam on Xenon-equipped builds. Standard builds used halogen H7; confirm by checking for a ballast module before ordering.
BMW S 1000 XR
(2015+ with Premium headlamp package option) — D2S projector HID low-beam on HID-equipped builds. Standard builds used halogen. Canadian-market specification may differ — confirm via the existing bulb code before ordering.
BMW K 1300 S
(2009–2016 with factory Xenon option) — D2S projector HID low-beam on Xenon-equipped builds. Confirm via the existing bulb code before ordering.
Unconfirmed / Pending Verification
The following platforms have been reported with factory or optional HID headlamps in some markets but are not confirmed for Canadian-specification builds as of model-year 2025. In each case, confirm by reading the bulb code stamped on the base of the existing capsule, or call us with your VIN before ordering.
Ducati Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak / 1260 Pikes Peak — D2S reported on select builds. Confirm via existing capsule.
Ducati Diavel 1260 / Diavel 1260 S — D2S reported on some variants. Confirm via existing capsule.
Kawasaki Ninja H2 SX SE / SE+ — Projector headlamp; bulb type unconfirmed for Canadian spec. Confirm via existing capsule.
Yamaha FJR1300ES — D2S reported in select markets; Canadian-specification may differ. Confirm via existing capsule.
No Factory D-Series HID — Common Misconceptions
The following platforms are frequently associated with HID-style lighting but do not use factory D-series bulbs in Canadian-market specification:
Honda Gold Wing GL1800 (all generations) — Uses H7 halogen low-beam from the factory. Many owners install aftermarket HID conversion kits using H4/H7 adapters; these are not factory D-series HID and do not use D1S or D2S capsules.
Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide / Street Glide / Ultra — Uses H13 halogen or Daymaker LED projector. No factory D-series HID on any CVO model sold in Canada.
Indian Roadmaster / Chieftain — Proprietary LED or halogen headlamp; no confirmed factory D-series HID.
Can-Am Spyder RT Limited / F3 Limited — 9005/HB3 halogen headlamp; no factory D-series HID.
Polaris Slingshot — Projector halogen or LED standard; no confirmed factory D-series HID.

Motorcycle HID Headlight FAQs
My BMW K1600 GT — D1S or D2S?
D1S. The K1600 GT, GTL, GTL Exclusive, Grand America, and Bagger all use D1S in the factory Xenon projector low-beam on 2011–2018 builds. D1S has an integrated igniter built into the capsule — the whole unit twists out as one piece.
My Gold Wing has HID — what bulb?
If your Gold Wing was not converted by a previous owner, it does not have factory D-series HID — all GL1800 generations use H7 halogen from the factory. Many Gold Wings have aftermarket HID conversion kits that use an H4 or H7 harness adapter. These are not D1S or D2S applications. Confirm by pulling the existing bulb: a D-series capsule will have a code printed on its base.
Are D-series HID bulbs available for discontinued motorcycle models?
Yes. Both D1S and D2S remain in active OEM aftermarket production and are direct drop-in replacements for all confirmed factory motorcycle HID applications.
Not sure if your motorcycle has factory HID?
The surest method is to pull the existing bulb and read the code on the base. A D-series capsule will be clearly marked D1S or D2S. If you have a ballast module mounted near the headlamp, the bike has factory HID. Send us your VIN or call 647‑547‑1962 and we will confirm before you order.
