Mini HID Headlight Bulb Guide — D1S, D2S Replacement for Cooper, Cooper S, Clubman, Convertible, Countryman & Coupe
Mini followed the BMW parent-brand pattern almost exactly. The original R50 / R52 / R53 generation (2002–2006) with the Xenon option used D2S (Mini/BMW OEM 63217160806; Osram 66240, Philips 85122). The second-generation R-chassis models — R55, R56, R57, R58, R59, R60 — transitioned to D1S (Mini/BMW OEM 63217217509; Osram 66144, Philips 85410) with the integrated igniter design. The F-chassis Mini (F55 / F56 / F60, 2014+) moved to full LED on the Adaptive headlamp package; halogen is standard otherwise, and factory HID is not available. D1S and D2S are not interchangeable. This guide covers factory HID-equipped trims only — always confirm the bulb code stamped on your existing capsule before ordering.

R56 (2009–2014 with Xenon option) — D1S projector HID low-beam. Lower trims used halogen in the same years.

R56 (2008–2014 with Xenon option) — D1S projector HID low-beam.
Cooper Clubman
R55 (2008–2014 with Xenon option) — D1S projector HID low-beam. Lower trims used halogen in the same years.
Cooper Convertible
R52 (2007 carryover) / R57 (2009–2017 with Xenon option) — D1S projector HID low-beam throughout the Convertible run.
Cooper Countryman
R60 (2011–2016 S / JCW with Xenon option) — D1S projector HID low-beam on HID-equipped trims.
Cooper Coupe
R58 (2007–2015 S / JCW with Xenon option) — D1S projector HID low-beam on HID-equipped trims.
Cooper Paceman
R61 (2013–2016 S / JCW with Xenon option) — D1S projector HID low-beam on HID-equipped trims. Lower trims used halogen. Canadian volumes were limited — confirm by reading the bulb code on your existing capsule.
F-chassis Mini (F55 / F56 / F60, 2014+)
Full LED headlamps on the Adaptive package; halogen standard otherwise. Factory HID was discontinued with the F-chassis launch and is not available on any F-series Mini in Canada.

My 2008 R56 Cooper — D1S or D2S?
D1S. The R56 uses D1S throughout its run. D1S has an integrated igniter built into the capsule — the whole unit twists out as one piece. If you have an R50 or R53 (2002–2006) with Xenon, the correct bulb is D2S.
Did the original R50 / R53 ever use D1S?
No. The R50 / R52 / R53 with the Xenon option always use D2S, which requires a separate ignitor. The switch to D1S happened with the R55 / R56 generation in 2007–2009.
Is the Mini Cooper projector bulb the same as a BMW?
Yes — the D1S capsule (Mini/BMW OEM 63217217509) is shared across multiple BMW and Mini R-chassis models. The headlamp assembly is Mini-specific, but the D1S capsule itself is identical to those used in the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series of the same era.
Does the F56 Cooper have factory HID?
Almost never in Canada. The F56 Adaptive Headlamp package uses full LED; halogen is standard on all other trims. If your F56 appears to have HID, confirm by pulling the existing capsule and reading the code — it is possible a previous owner retrofitted HID into the projector housing.
