Mazda HID Headlight Bulb Guide — D2S, D4S Replacement for Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5, CX-7, CX-9, MX-5 & RX-8

Mazda follows a clean D2S → D4S transition. Pre-2013 factory HID models use D2S (Mazda OEM 0000-11-D2S; Osram 66240, Philips 85122), while the 2013–2015 SkyActiv-G generation — Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5, and CX-9 — moved to mercury-free D4S (Mazda OEM 9070-39-350; Osram 66440, Philips 42402) as Mazda redesigned its projector headlamp system. From 2016 onward, top trims transitioned to full LED headlamps and no longer use a D-series capsule. D2S and D4S are not interchangeable — ballast voltage and base key differ. This guide covers factory HID-equipped trims only; always confirm the bulb code stamped on your existing capsule before ordering.

Factory HID Models (Mazda)

Mazda3
BK / BL (2004–2013 GT with factory HID) — D2S projector HID low-beam. Lower trims used halogen in the same years.
BM (2014–2016 GT with factory HID) — D4S projector HID low-beam. The 2014 SkyActiv-G redesign moved from D2S to D4S.

Mazda5
CW (2007–2017 GT with factory HID) — D2S projector HID low-beam throughout the full CW run.

Mazda6
GG / GH (2007–2013 GT with factory HID) — D2S projector HID low-beam.
GJ (2014–2015 GT with factory HID) — D4S projector HID low-beam. From 2016, the GJ Signature and GT moved to LED adaptive headlamps and no longer use a D-series bulb.

CX-5
KE (2013–2016 GT with factory HID) — D4S projector HID low-beam. The CX-5 launched directly on D4S and never used D2S. The KF generation (2017+) uses LED headlamps on GT and Signature trims.

CX-7
ER (2007–2012 GT with factory HID) — D2S projector HID low-beam throughout the full CX-7 run.

CX-9
TB first generation (2007–2012 GT with factory HID) — D2S projector HID low-beam.
TB refresh (2013–2015 GT with factory HID) — D4S projector HID low-beam. The TC generation (2016+) uses LED headlamps standard and does not use a D-series bulb.

MX-5 Miata
NC (2006–2015 GT with factory HID option) — D2S projector HID low-beam on HID-equipped trims. The ND generation (2016+) uses LED headlamps and does not use a D-series bulb.

RX-8
SE (2004–2011 GT with factory HID) — D2S projector HID low-beam throughout the full RX-8 run.

My 2014 Mazda3 GT — D2S or D4S?
D4S. The 2014 BM Mazda3 is the first year of the SkyActiv-G generation and uses mercury-free D4S throughout. If you have a 2004–2013 Mazda3 with factory HID, the correct bulb is D2S.

Can I install D2S in a CX-5 GT that came with D4S?
No. The CX-5 KE uses a D4S ballast with a different voltage curve and base key. Installing D2S in a D4S housing will cause ballast faults and incorrect output. Use D4S only.

My MX-5 has factory HID — D2S or D4S?
D2S. The NC Miata (2006–2015) with factory HID uses D2S throughout. The ND generation (2016+) moved to LED headlamps and does not have a D-series bulb.

Does the 2016 Mazda6 GJ still use D4S?
No. From 2016, the Mazda6 GJ Signature and GT moved to LED adaptive headlamps. D4S applies only to the 2014–2015 GJ GT. If you have a 2016+ Mazda6 and are unsure whether your headlamps are HID or LED, confirm by checking for a ballast module behind the housing before ordering.
