Land Rover HID Headlight Bulb Guide — D1S, D2S, D3S for Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, LR4, LR3, LR2, Discovery Sport & Evoque

Land Rover was an early HID adopter and uses three D-series capsules across its model range. The pre-2006 pattern is D2S (Osram 66240, Philips 85122); the 2006–2009 window transitions to D1S (Osram 66144, Philips 85410); and from 2010 onward the full Land Rover HID range standardised on D3S (Osram 66340, Philips 42302). Late-cycle L405 Range Rover Autobiography and L494 Range Rover Sport Autobiography Dynamic trims moved to LED Matrix headlamps and do not use a D-series capsule — confirm by checking for a ballast module behind the headlamp housing before ordering. This guide covers factory HID-equipped trims only.

Factory HID Models (Land Rover)

Range Rover
L322 (2002–2005) — D2S projector HID low-beam. The D2S capsule on these years requires a separate ignitor — do not omit it when replacing.
L322 refresh (2006–2009) — D1S projector HID low-beam. The 2006 mid-cycle refresh moved from D2S to D1S; the two capsules are not interchangeable.
L405 (2010–2019 HSE / Supercharged / Autobiography with factory HID) — D3S projector HID low-beam on HID-equipped trims. Late-cycle L405 Autobiography trims in Canada were specified with LED Matrix headlamps — confirm by checking for a ballast module behind the headlamp housing.

Range Rover Sport
L320 (2006–2009 with factory HID) — D2S projector HID low-beam throughout the L320 run.
L320 refresh / L494 (2010–2017 SE / HSE with factory HID) — D3S projector HID low-beam. Note: the L494 Autobiography Dynamic and Supercharged Dynamic came with LED headlamps — confirm by checking for a ballast before ordering.

LR3
L319 (2008–2009 HSE with factory HID) — D1S projector HID low-beam on HID-equipped trims. Lower trims and earlier LR3 years used halogen headlamps.

LR4
L319 refresh (2010–2016 HSE / HSE Lux with factory HID) — D3S projector HID low-beam throughout the full LR4 run.

LR2 (Freelander 2)
L359 (2008–2015 HSE with factory HID) — D1S projector HID low-beam on HID-equipped trims. Lower trims used halogen in the same years.

Range Rover Evoque
L538 (2012–2017 Pure / Prestige / Dynamic with factory HID) — D3S projector HID low-beam on HID-equipped trims. The L538 refresh (2018–2019) moved most trims to LED headlamps.

Discovery Sport
L550 (2016–2017 HSE / HSE Luxury with factory HID option) — D3S projector HID low-beam. Later Discovery Sport years standardised on LED headlamps.

Discovery 5 / Defender
L462 Discovery 5 (2017+) and L663 Defender (2020+) — full LED headlamps standard on all Canadian-spec trims; no factory HID and no D-series bulb.

Land Rover HID Headlight FAQs

My 2008 Range Rover — D1S or D2S?
D1S. The L322 mid-cycle refresh in 2006 moved from D2S to D1S; 2008 is firmly in the D1S window. If you have a 2005 or earlier L322, you need D2S.

My 2014 Range Rover Sport — HID or LED?
It depends on the trim. The L494 SE and HSE used D3S projector HID. The Autobiography Dynamic and Supercharged Dynamic moved to LED headlamps. Confirm by checking for a ballast module behind the headlamp housing — if a ballast is present, you have factory HID.

Did the LR3 ever use D3S?
No. The LR3 (2008–2009) used D1S on HID-equipped trims. D3S did not appear on Land Rover vehicles until the 2010 platform update, which launched as the LR4.

My Evoque headlights are flickering — bulb or ballast?
Start with the bulb. D3S capsules typically begin to dim and shift colour temperature at around four years of regular use, and flickering is the most common early symptom. Swap the suspect bulb first — if the flicker follows the bulb to the other side, the capsule is the cause. Ballasts on the Evoque tend to outlast the bulbs by several years.

Not sure which bulb your Land Rover needs?
The bulb code is stamped on the base of the capsule. If you cannot access it easily, send us your VIN or call 647‑547‑1962 and we will confirm the correct type before you order.
