Hyundai HID Bulb Guide — D1S, D3S Replacement for Genesis, Equus, Sonata, Santa Fe

Hyundai HID Headlight Bulb Replacement Guide

Hyundai's factory HID era was concentrated on the Genesis, Equus, top-trim Sonata, Azera, Santa Fe, and Genesis Coupe. Pre-2015 HID models almost exclusively used D1S (Hyundai OE 18647-35006; Osram 66144, Philips 85410); the 2015+ Sonata LF and Santa Fe DM HID trims moved to D3S (Hyundai OE 18647-35007; Osram 66340, Philips 42302). Many Hyundai models in the same year were sold with halogen headlamps; this guide covers factory HID-equipped trims only. Always confirm the D-code stamped on your existing capsule before ordering.

Factory HID Models (Hyundai)

Genesis Sedan
BH (2009–2014) and DH (2015–2016) — D1S throughout the full model run on both generations. HID was fitted on upper Genesis trims; lower trims in the same years used halogen — confirm by checking for a ballast module behind the headlamp housing.

Genesis Coupe
BK (2010–2016 GT / R-Spec with factory HID) — D1S projector HID low-beam. Base 2.0T trims used halogen in the same years.

Equus
VI (2011–2016) — D1S standard on all Equus trims. HID was fitted as standard equipment across the full Equus range.

Sonata
YF (2011–2014 Limited with factory HID) — D1S; non-Limited YF Sonata trims used halogen in the same years.
LF (2015–2019 Sport / Limited with factory HID) — D3S. Hyundai moved from D1S to D3S with this generation. The majority of LF Sonata trims in Canada use halogen — only the Sport and Limited HID-package trims use D3S.

Azera
HG (2012–2017 Limited with factory HID) — D1S throughout the HG generation. Standard and Premium trims used halogen.

Santa Fe
DM (2013–2018 Limited with factory HID) — D3S projector HID low-beam. Despite the early model year, the DM Santa Fe's factory HID system uses D3S, not D1S. Most DM Santa Fe trims used halogen — verify you have the HID-equipped Limited trim and confirm the bulb code on your existing capsule before ordering.

Hyundai HID Headlight FAQs

My 2015–2016 Genesis Sedan has HID headlights. Is it D1S or D3S?
The 2015–2016 DH Genesis Sedan uses D1S, the same as the earlier BH generation. Although Hyundai moved to D3S for the Sonata LF in 2015, the Genesis Sedan retained D1S for its entire production run through 2016.

How do I know if my Sonata LF (2015–2019) has factory HID or halogen?
Look behind the headlamp housing for a ballast module — a small black rectangular box. If it is present, you have factory HID (D3S). If there is no ballast, your Sonata has halogen and does not use a D-series bulb.

The Santa Fe DM is a 2013 — why does it use D3S and not D1S like other early Hyundais?
Hyundai introduced D3S on different models at different times — the transition was not uniform across the lineup. The DM Santa Fe's factory HID system was designed for D3S from its 2013 introduction. If you are uncertain, read the code stamped on the base of your existing capsule before ordering.

What is the difference between D1S and D3S?
D1S has an integrated igniter built into the bulb base and runs at higher voltage. D3S also has an integrated igniter but is mercury-free. They are not interchangeable — D1S and D3S fit different ballast systems. Always match the bulb type to what was originally fitted.

Not sure which bulb your Hyundai needs?
The bulb code is stamped on the base of the capsule. If you cannot access it easily, send us your VIN or call 647‑547‑1962 and we will confirm the correct type before you order.
