BMW HID Headlight Bulb Guide — D1S, D2S Replacement for 3, 5, 7 Series, X5 & More

BMW HID Bulb Replacement Guide

This guide is only for BMW models that came from the factory with HID ("Bi-Xenon") low-beams. Many BMWs in the same body style were also sold with halogen or full LED headlamps, and any car that originally had halogen and was retrofitted to HID will not use a factory D-series bulb or OEM ballast configuration. Always confirm by checking the bulb code stamped on the capsule and the markings on the headlamp housing before ordering.

BMW used projector-type HID systems on many 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series and X-series models from the late 1990s up to the transition to full LED around 2016. Early factory xenon systems in these cars generally use Pair D2S HID Bulbs — OEM Replacement, corresponding to BMW D2S part numbers such as 63 21 7 160 806 (63217160806) and related supersessions. Later Bi-Xenon applications typically use Pair D1S HID Bulbs — OEM Replacement, matching BMW D1S part numbers 63 21 7 162 862 (63217162862), 63 21 7 160 807 (63217160807) and 63 21 7 217 509 (63217217509).

BMW HID FAQs

Is my E90 D1S or D2S?
All factory Bi-Xenon E90 applications use Pair D1S HID Bulbs — OEM Replacement matched to BMW D1S part numbers such as 63 21 7 217 509; D2S is not used in E90 Bi-Xenon projectors.

Why does my BMW say "Adaptive Headlights" — does that change the bulb?
No. Adaptive headlights add motors and control electronics to turn or level the projector, but they use the same D1S or D2S capsule as non-adaptive factory xenon systems in the same chassis.

Can I replace one D1S bulb and not both?
Yes. We would be happy to sell you a single bulb, but it is best practice is to replace HID bulbs as a pair since brightness drops over time, and a new bulb colour will not match an aged one.

Will an aftermarket H7 kit work in a BMW that came with D1S or D2S?
No. A BMW that left the factory with D1S or D2S Bi-Xenon uses an HID-only projector, OEM ballast and D-series wiring; an H7-based kit is designed for halogen reflectors or projectors and is not a correct replacement.
